New born turtle

A turtle coming out of the nest after hatching. In the fall of 2009 we dug up the turtles that were buried by the previous class. Here is one of the new born turtles coming out of his nest.

Relocating Snapper Eggs

We found two Snapping turtle egg nests by the Morgan Bowl, and one by a softball field behind the school. We dug a new nest by the ponds and brought the eggs there. After burying the eggs, we place a screen over the nest to protect them from predators. -John Barry

Nest Site

This is the nest site we use for the snapping turtle eggs. The eggs are buried in diefferent nests depending upon how they are laid (there are three nests in this picture). The eggs are then covered with dirt, and a protecteive cage is placed over them and buried to prevent predators from getting at the eggs.

garter snake

This is a garter snake who bit into one of the student's gloves. It was probably acting aggressively because of the constant handling during measurements. After biting the glove, its fangs became stuck in the glove and it could not stop biting, so we had to help it to get its fangs out.

Garter Snake Measuring

To measure the garter snake's length, we put them into a tube and cover one end with our hand to prevent the snake from coming out of one end, then we stretch out the snake's tail and measure the length of the snake.

Measurements

Here we have a green frog that fell into one of the pitfall traps by the two holding ponds. Before we release the frogs, we take measurements of each to see if there is any general pattern of growth over the years. We measure from nose to tail (as shown in this picture), tibia length, and weight.

Painted Turtle

This is a picture of a paited turtle. So far, we have found a lot of painted turtles. One day we found three. The painted turtle has a full carapace. This allows the turtle to pull completely into its shell to keep safe from harm.
